Why this one number, checked before 9:15 AM, gives traders a rough idea of how the day might open.
Gift Nifty is a Nifty 50 futures contract traded at NSE IFSC, an exchange based in GIFT City, Gujarat — a special financial zone built to attract international trading activity to India. It was formerly known as SGX Nifty, when the same contract traded on the Singapore Exchange before trading shifted to GIFT City in 2022.
What makes it useful is timing: Gift Nifty trades nearly around the clock, including through the hours before Indian markets open at 9:15 AM. Regular Nifty 50 trading on NSE only runs during Indian market hours, so there's no live read on Nifty itself overnight — Gift Nifty fills that gap.
Because Gift Nifty tracks the same underlying index as Nifty 50, its price relative to the previous day's Nifty close gives an early signal — not a certainty, but a reasonable estimate — of how the Indian market might open. If Gift Nifty is trading meaningfully above yesterday's Nifty close, that's typically read as a sign of a higher opening. If it's meaningfully below, a lower opening is more likely.
The gap between Gift Nifty's current price and Nifty's last close is often called the "spread." As a general pattern traders use informally:
These aren't official exchange rules — they're informal thresholds many traders use as a rough gauge, and the exact numbers different people use can vary.
Important limitation: Gift Nifty is a useful early signal, not a forecast. Overnight global news, domestic developments before market open, and order flow once trading actually begins can all move the real opening price away from what Gift Nifty suggested. Treat it as one input, not a guarantee.
Once the market moves into its 9:00–9:07 AM pre-open session, real Nifty orders start flowing in and the picture becomes clearer than Gift Nifty alone could show. By 9:15 AM, when normal trading begins, the actual opening price reflects real domestic order flow — which is usually in the same direction Gift Nifty suggested, but not always by the same magnitude.
Script Tick's homepage shows Gift Nifty's live price alongside Nifty 50's last close, along with an automatically calculated "expected opening" estimate based on the spread between the two. The banner updates through each phase of the morning — from the early pre-market hours, through the 9:00–9:07 AM order window, through price discovery, and into live trading at 9:15 AM.
In short: Gift Nifty is the closest thing to a live Nifty 50 price outside Indian market hours. It's a genuinely useful early signal — just not a promise of exactly how the day will unfold.
